Timed assessment as the Hair Stylist

When i was first paired up with Rachel I wasn't to sure or happy and I was nervous because I had never worked on Afro Caribbean hair before so I did not know what to expect plus I didn't see much of Rachel at that time so I assumed she was someone that didn't like to come to classes that often. Now actually working with her I have to say o was so wrong I loved working with Rachel she has been so great to work with she's been at every class and has been understanding as well. She was so easy to get hold of when it came to practicing each other's look she was there to spend how ever many hours. I am so glad to be have paired with her and it's given me a new skill now I feel like I can actually work on anyone's hair. When it did come to her design I did have to help her design her style and push her to be a bit more daring that what everyone else was doing but I loved the fact she was very open minded to any sujjestions and was happy to take and advice to help her further better.

When it came to assessment day Rachel was in on time prepared with her notes and picture we managed to pre-prep the hair in time and even got a little practice before the assessment.

For Rachel's hair I made two paddings out of yak hair and hair nets i moulded it in to shape that she wanted her hair to be then before the assessment I did side ways right locks in her hair for my prepping I had to use hair spray to keep them in place and pin them. When the assessment started Rachel had draw her hair design and had notes which was very helpful I was actually excited to do the design and finally work my skills to the best I could.

For the hair I already had my prep curls I the sectioned the hair in two in the top section I split that hair in the middle then took out a small section to create plaits for a base to pin in my padding. Once I created the base I then pinned in each padding and started in working with each side I had already crimped Rachel's hair and brushed it out so it gave me more thickness and texture I back comb the hair and started covering each hair padding using hair spray to make sure the was no fly aways and the hair was put back nice and smooth and pinned it in to place. I then created a non passed bun at the back of her hair where I tied her hair in to a pony tail took out 4 sections and back combed them and made each section in to a barrel curl the I joined them up with a loose grip.
Once the bun was complete u took the pins out the front curls and made sure I sprayed them with hairspray so the don't budge or fall out I tried to make it look even but that was a bit too much of a challenge for me but I will get there one day, I then slicked the back front and side of her baby hairs down making sure there was no fly aways. I then dressed the hair with pearls in the middle of the hair.

Now looking at the pictures and analysing them I think my front parting is a bit off is not as straight if I could do that again I would make it look straighter and I would work on the front curls more and try make them look more dimensional.

I am very proud of her end results and my timing in doing the hair I got it done fast but I wanted to make sure I used up all my time making sure the hair was perfect.

Timed Assessment as the Designer

When it came to do my times assessment as a designer Rachel my partner was on time and prepared with all the tools and equipment needed. She was very quick and professional in laying out her equipment and I put up the notes for her step by step on how to create the hairstyle. She has been a really good partner to work with she met up during our own time to practice our looks and she help me gain confidence in my final look. I am some body that needs a second opinion. When it came to the assessment she made me feel very comfortable even though I could see nerves was getting the best of her at that time before we started but once the clock started her perfessionalist shined through.

During the assessment I felt like she got a little confused and then when she looked at the notes she was back on track again. I feel like when I first starting working with her she didn't have much confidence in her work and was afraid to be a little ruff with the hair she was too gentle at first but when we started practicing I had to tell her that is ok to grip the hair a little bit tighter as it won't hurt me. She asked me if I was ok and let me know what she was doing step by step. I was a little nervousness because since we practiced a few times I felt like she was putting in the pads too down to the hair and I was itching to tell her but ofcourse I could not I just nd to sit there with nerves. I did get nervous for her throughout the assessment because I was hoping she wouldn't forget a part of the hairstyle or a step but she kept reading the notes and I feel like that kept her going.

I believe Rachel did do an amazing job but I also think that nerves did get the most of her that day because when we practiced our looks in a calm and comfortable environment she did the hairstyle perfectly in my hair. This one wasn't as perfect there was some pins showing and some of the padding was showing. But I am still very proud of her because when I first started working with her she would give up to easily and lacked a bit of confidence when doing my hair. The results where great but I know she could have done better because I have seen her do much better but to how she was with hair to start of with and how she is now is like a big confident step and I believe her skills had improved so much working with her.

I really enjoyed my experience with Rachel and she has now become a good friend to me before she was this shy girl who didn't speak to much and needed a little push do get that confidence and now she has broken out her barrier and is more involved and is actually a very fun person to be with I really loved my experience with her and I would love to work with her again . I feel like we really bounced off each other and just got on with it and motivated each other to do better and work harder at university.

Frizzing the Hair

Frizzing the hair is a great way to help sculpt and shape the hair in the Elizabethan era women use to have frizzy  hair texture in there hairstyle.

In class I had learnt two ways to make free hair frizzy which would add volume and texture to the hair.

The frist technique I used was hair crimpers I first sectioned the hair taking a neat section starting from the bottom working my way to the top. Wait till the crimp style has cooled down and  once it has then brush out the crimped hair. When the hair has been brushed out you will then get this beautiful  volume hair that is easy to sculpt great to cover up hair paddings. Crimping is a great technique for creating an Elizabethan hairstyle as it gives you a similar texture they used in thier hair at that time.

The second technique I used was wrapping the hair on a loose pin I then got a straightners and then pressed it on the curls I created on the pin and left it to cool down once I took them out I got this beautiful zig zag curl and once I brushed it out I got this amazing volume and frizz to the hair. This is a really great  technique to use to create really frizzy hair  the more you brush it the bigger and frizzy it gets this is also another great way to sculpt and create an amazing hairstyle to cover up paddings and shape and gives a great texture even if you don't brush it out.

Practicing my hair design

For my final look my partner Rachel had come over to my house to practice my hair design I have to say we did practice first time but it did not come out as great as this and I was really proud of the outcome as it was her second attempt of doing my hair. For this look we made two hair pads using yak hair and hairnets so that it matches the colour of my hair and is easy to pin in as I found using hair pads stuffed with tissue in tights were hard to pin in. So first my hair was section of in two then she created a base to help secure in their hair party she first took a small section and created them in to plaits and crossed them over then she tonged in the front of my hair and let them cool down. She pinned in the padding then started to back comb the hair and covered up the padding and pinned it in made sure it was nice and smoother so there was no loose grips and then at the back on my hair she sectioned them in to two twist plait my hair and made them in to a round curl. For the front of the hair she then decorated them towards the padding and held them with a loose grip. I had fun practicing this look and I was very happy with my overall look.

Practicing my partners design

When I was first paired up with Rachel I was really worried because I had never worked on Afro Caribbean hair before and I didn't know what to expect or how I would manage to do the hair but now I am glad I did get paired with Rachel as it gave me new skills on working with Afro Caribbean hair and showed me how easy it actually is to sculpt Afro carribean hair.

When it came down to practicing my partners hairstyle this was my first attempt I used hair padding made out of tights and socks she wanted a heart shape hairstyle and was not too sure what to do with the back so I came up with this idea to help her. I used a pintail comb to section out the hair I then created a base for the hair padding and pinned two in back combed the hair a little bit and covered the hair then I added two more padding to the back and pinned them in. For the front of the hair I just twist the hair back. I did not use any hairspray for this for this practice hairstyle as it was just a practice and I did not want to stiffen the hair.

My second and last attempt

This was a second and last attempt in practicing and we both thought the hair design came out looking amazing we created tight curls at the front of the hair and fa heart shape and a none padding bun at the back. I had to slick down the front of Rachel's hair and for this I did use product for the hair.

I was overall happy and glad at the same time as the results came out really good in my practice run and my partner Rachel was happy with the outcome of the practice run I just hope my final pen comes out just as good.

My hair design

For my hair design I could not make any sketches of my idea because I am terrible at drawing but for my final idea I did change it a few times in order to get exactly what I felt was the best.

http://imgmf0.starnow.com/90/2236890_4244106.jpg

At first I wanted to have the heart shape hairstyle in my hair but when I came don to actually doing it there was not contemporary touch to it I loved the idea of big hair. So at first my idea was to have curls and crimp in my hair and the top was made in to a heart shape and in the back I would have a bun and some pin style crimped hair but not loosened. I got that idea from the film Elizabeth really loved that idea. But I felt like everyone in the class was doing the same hairstyle or a very similar so I ended up changing it.

For my final hair design I loved the look of Beyoncé's hair style how it was still big but slanted to the side. So I took that in to my hair idea and I wanted to go opposite instead or crimped hair and texture on the hair padding I then decided to have it sleek and smoothie for the front of my hair I wanted it to be curly but having some kind of fringe so it framed my face, as I have a chubby face I don't like my hair pushed away I prefer hair strand to fall on the side to compliment my face shape and not make it look chubby so I took my face shape in to consideration when designing my final idea. At th back I wanted something not too difficult but detail. I kept the structure of my hairstyle as an Elizabethan but changed the different elements over and I tested out the look with my partner Rachel and great results came from that.

My first Elizabethan hairstyle

I first tried to create my Elizabethan hairstyle on my dolly head I crimped the back of the hair to create volume and texture and then created curls in the front. This was a bit of challenge for me as it was my first time I feel like I spent too long on curling the hair. I am happy with the results of this hair style I just pinned everything to the bun and pinned back the front of the hair.

This was my second attempt on the hair for creating an Elizabethan hairstyle was on Martina I tried to make the heart shape on the head unfortunately she did not want her hair crimped at the time so I had to just try and cover the padding with her hair  I back combed most of it but it was a challenge I was not too happy with the results because I was limited to so less but this teaches me a skill to work with clients that don't like heat in thier hair so better to do an alternative way. I also made a non padded bun in the back I used a tail comb and a styling out brush to achieve this look I have to work on some of my skills.

My first attempt

This was my first attempt in my Elizabethan hair I did it on my dolls head and it didn't come out how I really wanted it to be but I have to say I am still very proud at the fact I love the detailing of curls at the front which didn't come out great but came out reasonable good I feel like I can do better if I come up with an structured idea and not spend too much time in prepping the hair. I do want to get stronger in hair and develop better skills but this is just the first steps in order to reach a whole new skill level.

Elizabethan Vs Contemporary

http://goodmusicbrighterchildren.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Queen-Elizabeth-1.jpg

Queen Elizabeth I I have to say is the trend setter for this day and age the texture or her hair is frizzy and curly and big I believe that the hairstyles then has influenced out hairstyles now I was looking at contemporary Elizabethan hairstyles and this one below popped up of lady gaga. Her hair style to me is so elizabethan even the way her clothing is obviously gaga does this out ravenous beautiful hairstyles but u believe her hair styles are totally a contemporary version of Queen Elazabeth  the big texture hair just what the queen wore her self. The light fair hoe pale desired skin and natural lips complete Elizabethan Queen Elizabeth is the legend of the hairstyles with the texture curls and frizzy ness we all love to create today ipwnd is worn by so many iconic faces such as BeyoncĂ©, lady gaga, Rihanna and many more.

Elizabethan Adornments

In the Elizabethan era women was dedicated to the fashion so we're the men the rich and poor wore different types of hair adornments, the rich wore more elaborate adornments like jewels, hair nets made out of silk and the poor would still stay in the fashion trend but would use cheaper materials in thier hairs.

Feathers- women use to wear feather in the hair from different birds such as peacock feathers.

http://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium/portrait-of-a-young-woman-with-a-white-coif--1541-hans-holbein-the-younger.jpg
The Coif- is made out of white linen a close fitted cap. It was worn to keep the hair intact of elobrate hairstyles.

http://speedy.theanneboleynfiles.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/anne_boleyn-231x300.jpg
The French hood- was first brought to fashion by Anne Boyleyn it was a moon shape cap and the edges was normally decorated with pearls and jewels.

The Atifet was a heart shaped hood worn on the hair very similar to the French hood it was also decorated with pearls and jewels.

The Caul- this was an Elizabethan hair net is was used to cover the back of the hair or they had hair nets that were fabric on the net and these hairnets was also decorated with spangles.

The Pillbox- this was an Elizabethan style of hat which had a veil attached to it.

Pearls and jewels- Elizabethan women also wore jewels on there head or jewels made out of glass, crowns was also used to decorate the hair and even pearls in the hair.

Ribbons- a lot of Elizabethan also wore ribbons in the hair including it in to thier hair plaits.

Modern Elizabethan Hairstyles

https://31.media.tumblr.com/7923c859e98f30605638541fcddf4a73/tumblr_inline_ncza7eaeO41rawsdi.jpg
This hairstyle really caught my eye because it was very elizabethan even though the hair is not styled up in a style but I love the texture and volume and fizziness of the hair. She looks like she is wearing a designed artifet with jewels and pearls even though the hair adornment is what makes this look I really love how is contemporary but still has that Elizabethan touch to it.

This hairstyle was amazing

This contemporary Elizabethan hairstyle is amazing I love the fact they still used the Elizabethan shape having two hearts and I love the detailing in the middle with a plait.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1MmQEe9AHP7w4AeIEPDmNvJXn_tWKJKOcDa1LQKKhXPKfmtggpc3UQx4yvtBKnGHP1zxcEp6dWhh3GQxgz6YKeDszDcZ064GEi3TwownA_1l9_GNr333jqzvuTbaMfVoEsfwjoGvP05U_/s640/avant_garde_3-TONIGUY-2009.jpg
This hairstyle is very elizabethan I love how the structure of the hair still has an heart shape going on it looks like the hair stylist used wiring and hair pieces to create this look and has dressed the hair out and added the frizz invests to the ends of the hair. The middle section looks like atheist way they made a hair piece it looks like what Elizabethans would wear as a hair adornment.

this hair style reminds me of the Colf hair nets they wore in the Elizabethan era instead of using fabric they used hair to create the net and added adornments like they do in the Elizabethan era.

http://reallifechic.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/picture-1.png
This hairstyle of Beyoncé I love it totally has the frizz and texture in the hair and the padding but has the edgy touch to it looks completely amazing this is one look I really want to use for my design it truly catches my eyes.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVuZsaJD0bkuNls5f6RLe5G9vFxSPaufbz2w2gpqTwPVRZxBB8vqJnaxEk7qf6ztMAH6nfJvELT_BD3dr2I17AtCUBKOwogO-CME3lSFOBAuYZQ6WTU3QN8pSzYH64IHAzOD8mUgDE4Dys/s640/mcqueenelizabethian.jpg

This whole look is contemporary Elizabethan I love how it still has the heart shape instead of neat tight curls is all frizzy but straight and is messy. When I first looked at this picture I was thinking it's very daring and edgy. I am completely in love with this look.

I feel like even now in fashion shows, TV, films and fashion icons there looks are still inspired by the Elizabethan era. Queen Elizabeth I has created a style that still hasn't died till this day everyone is still inspired by her sense and they re create her looks in so many different ways having thier own creativity touch to it. Even little girls with two big buns in there hair is very elizabethan this look is very iconic and there will just be new versions of the Elizabethan looks but just newer versions but the heart shape structure the big frizzy hair will never die.

Plaits and buns

In class we learnt how to do different styles of plait and buns

It was my first time attempting how to do a French plait I was pretty happy with the results of my French plait.

Second I did a fishtail plait which was pretty easy to do you just section the hair in to two sections and take the hair from the sides taking it over to the next section.

The third thing I made was a bun without a padding I first section the hair off then I tied it in to a pony tail made four different sections back combed each section made it into a barrel curl pinned it in from both sides once I completed the four I then joined each section up together and walaa I ended up with a perfect bun shape without a padding.

Theses techniques are really good and will be helpful towards my Elizabethan look as in the Elizabethan era they wore a lot of plait in the hair and included buns in there style.

Introduction

http://www.marileecody.com/gloriana/rainbowlarger.jpg

I will be making an contemporary Elizabethan hairstyle and will be learning new skills on what I have learnt, reserched in my owntime and class. I was not at first good with hair but when I went to college I had learnt some different types of skills on how to do hair but yet I am still not that very confident on my skills in hair.

In this project I have to research and practice different techniques and skills that I learn in class to create an Elizabethan hair and look at historical images on what kind of hairstyles to create. I will then design out my plan and will be partnered up with another person who will be the stylist who will follow my notes and design plan to create my contemporary Elizabethan hairstyle on me.

When it came to Elizabetha Era there was a dramatic change as in the Tudors women did not make such dramatic hairstyles and or makeup at all. The ideal Elizabethan woman was a woman with red or blonde fair hair and naturally curly as Queen Elizabeth had them and people wanted to look like her. The even started wearing wigs which was made from horse hair and hair from the poor. To create the big elobrate hair they would use hair padding and wires and add in hair pieces. The trend has not change since women still wear wigs, hair padding and hair pieces till this day.

In the Elizabethan era the most elaborate hair was worn by women with higher status and they were the main trend setters. Young girls would have thier hair out flowing to represent the virginity and that they was not married once a woman would get married on her wedding day she would pick a desired hairstyle and would wear her hair up and styled to show that she is married.

http://www.elizabethan-portraits.com/ElizabethAustria.jpg

The texture of the hairstyles was crimped and curly frizzy hair I think this big hair helped them easily sculpt thier hair in to the style the wanted. Women would shave or pluck thier hair line back to make thier forehead look bigger so they can show how smart they was. To achieve the ideal hair colour women would bleach thier hair or use urine to colour the hair or cumin seeds, saffron, oil and celandine.

Head Coverings for Women
The Elizabethan fashion dictated that the head was adorned with a hat, veil, coif or caul. This fashion therefore ensured that much of the hair was hidden by some form of head coverings. The style of the head covering dictated the hairstyle. Many of the hats were adorned with feathers, pearls, glass jewels, spangles, gold thread, embroidery and lace.

  • The Coif - The coif ( commonly referred to as the 'biggin' ) worn by all children. Material was plain white linen, a close fitting cap tied under the chin. Coifs were often worn as caps to keep hair in place under more elaborate hats
  • The French hood - Introduced from the French court by Anne Boleyn, the mother of Queen Elizabeth I. A half moon, or crescent, style band or brim sloping away from the face. The edges were often adorned with pearls or glass jewels, called bilaments, and a veil covered the bacof the hair
  • The Atifet - Similar to the French hood style but with a heart shaped crescent - favoured in white by Mary Queen of Scots. Lace trimmnigs were added
  • The Caul - Cauls were the Elizabethan hair net! A Caul covered the hair at the back of the head and was made of fabric, or fabric covered by netted cord which was sometimes adorned with spangles.
  • The Pillbox style of hat - often had a veil attached to the back
(This Head Coverings for Women has been taken from I do not claim it as my own  http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-hair-styles.htm)

http://nttreasurehunt.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/ntiii_nost_960230_large.jpg

From my research and studying different Elizabethan portraits women in the Elizabethan Era wore jewels, ribbons, hats, feathers and pearls in thier hair I'm sure these women must of been very rich to afford to wear these in thier hair.

Elizabethan Society

The Elizabethan women showed thier status by thier clothes makeup and hairstyles. The upper class rich women where the trend setters the would have elaborate clothes and hair they would wear white face paint to achieve the desired look. The big hair with jewels and hats and hair nets made out of silk was worn by the rich they would make thier hair much more elaborate so that thier status is shown from thier appearance.

The poor did try to follow the hair fashion but they wouldn't have the elaborate hair styles as the rich did they would wear cheap versions of hair nets and do most plaits and buns in thier hair once a woman was married keeping her hair tied up was an indicator the woman was p successfully married. Un married women would leave there hair out flowing to indicate that they was ready to be weded.
